Horner, John Sr. (b. ABT 1728, d. ABT 1818)
Note: The following is from Laurel Messenger - Feb. 1984. "The Horner Family History" by Jack Horner Bell.
"The first traces of the old patriarch are found in the early 1740's near Hanover, Berwick Township, York (later Adams) County. His sons were born in the 1740's. ...
1770, John Horner, Sr. and his six sons crossed the first chain of the Appalachians into Franklin (then Cumberland) County. Before, during, and after the Revolution, they amassed hundreds of acres in the fertile, idyllic valley near Waynesboro. The principal property was called "Hornhead" and is still farmed to this day.
[During the Revolutionary War] Even though he was above the age limit of 54, old John Horner, Senior, volunteered and served in the Cumberland County Militia. He had six sons and before the war was over, every one of them had also served in the same battalion of Militia.
This propsperous German family also made monetary contributions to the Continental Congress. The father and two of his sons contributed their skills as gunsmiths."

From "Ancestral History of the Horner-Friedline-Hoffman Relationships: Ancestors and Descendants" by Ethel Horner Hill.
"John Horner came to America from Germany in the early to middle of the 1700's. John was a gunsmith and a farmer, a German Baptist. The family migrated from Berwick Twp., Adams County, in 1770 to Franklin County, then Cumberland County. In 1796 to 1800, the Horners migrated to Somerset County via Forbes Road, now Route 30, or the Lincoln Highway, fanning out from Stoystown. John was married to Elizabeth. They had six son: John, Jr., Abraham, Solomon, Frederick, Daniel, and Elias. John and all six sons served in the American Revolution. John and Elizabeth must have had daughters, names and birthdates are unknown."

Research from another Horner researcher shows John Horner aka Johannes Hanauer was married to Anna Elizabeth Groscost. She was born about 1719 in Mutterstadt, Bavaria and died in York county, PA. This researcher also shows him to be born abt 1719 not 1728.

Note: LDS Ancestral File lists Christians birthplace as Oberdorf, Canton Basel, Leistal, Switzerland. Leistal is a city in the canton of Basel. Perhaps Oberdorf is a small nearby town or perhaps Oberdorf is the church parish in the town of Leistal, Basel, Switzerland.
Note: I got Elizabeth's birthplace off of the Internet. I don't believe there is a place called Farmsburg, Switzerland. It might be Färningen.
