FAGAN/FEGAN SURNAME HISTORY
by Paul McCotter
MacLysaght derives this surname from the word pagan but gives no authority. The earliest occurrence is in Dublin around 1200, where the family was long established as a burgher family, a branch moving to Cork City in the fifteenth-century. The family was also prominent in County Meath from the fourteenth century onwards and is later found in County Waterford.
This Surname History is reproduced with the kind permission of Irish Roots Magazine in which it was first published as part of the feature article, Anglo-Norman Surnames of Ireland (part 4), in issue 1, 1998.

From "Biographical Review Vol 32: Containing life sketches of leading citizens of Somerset & Bedford counties." 1899.
pp.68, 305.
"Thomas Elliott settled in Cumberland Valley Township when this section of the State was but a part of the frontier wilderness, abounding in game."
"The founder of the Elliott family of Pennsylvania it is suposed, came from England. Many of his descendants in this State have been prominent and influential citizens.
"Thomas Elliott was an early settler of Cumberland Valley, Bedford county, and as a man of practical ability and good judgment occupied an honored position in the community. He purchased wild land, and reclaimed a comfortable homestead, on which he resided until his death. He was a Democrat in his political views, and for a number of terms he served as Road Supervisor in Cumberland Valley. Of the children born to his union with his wife Martha, three survive, namely: Elizabeth, wife of John Dickens; George, the particular subject of this brief sketch; and Ruth, widow of Lloyd Rice."
Note: by NWH 1999. This 1899 bio supposes that Thomas came from England, but the 1850 census reports him as being born in Virginia.
Note: 2001. From History of Bedford & Somerset Counties, Vol. 1, p. 81. "The provincial Convention which met on the 15th of July, 1776, and on the 28th of September following, adopted the State constitution, also appointed justices of the peace for the several counties of the state, and required that, before entering upon the duties of their office, they should take an oath of renunciation of the authority of George III, and of allegiance to the constitution of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Bedford county was represented in this convention by Benjamin Elliott, Thomas Coulter, John Burd, John Wilkins, John Cessna, Thomas Smith, and Joseph Powell." Perhaps this Benjamin was the father of Thomas and he, not Thomas was the above-mentioned "founder of the Elliott family" who came from England to Virginia then to Bedford county prior to 1776.
