Note: Civil War Service - Private, Co. C 46th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. July 1862 - Sept. 1863.
His Civil War pension claim of July 17, 1893 lists his occupation as Superintendant of the Revere postal station. His August 18, 1901 gives his occupation as a real estate dealer.
1907 Pension papers show the following places of residence since the Civil War -- Savannah, Georgia, Revere and Boston, Massachusetts and Los Angeles, California.
Family lore has it that after his service in the war, the family had a terrible time getting him to come back north, because he had found a Southern girl of whom he was much enamored. I recall reading papers that were in my grandmother's possession that was an affidavit written by Nettie to the Veteran's pension office that "she was his one and only wife." Apparently someone in Georgia was also claiming to be his wife! Did he actually marry a southern girl that the family disapproved of, and whom he deserted to stay in the family's good graces?
His dates of service end in 1863, he was married to Nettie Parsons in Groton, Mass in 1864 and Charles was born in 1865. All this suggests he came straight home from the war. However, on the 1870 census JH and AA Putnam with four-year old Charles are living in Savannah Georgia. [Year: 1870; Census Place: Savannah, Chatham, Georgia; Roll: M593_141; Page: 384; Image: 76.] There is also a 5-year gap between the birth of Charles and Frank. Did John leave her and move south during that time? Did she come south to coax him home? The family was back in Massachusetts for Harold's birth in 1872.
