John PRESCOTT
!PRESCOTT genealogy NEHGR: Jul 1958; p 238. "English Origins of New England Families": pp 937-38.
!NOTE: His parentage is uncomfirmed. Many published genealogies list the speculation that he was the son of Ralph PRESCOTT and
Elizabeth STANDISH. NEHGS genealogists assert that this is unlikely, as John was a blacksmith -- and the PRESCOTTs of Standish,
Lancashire, England were all highly educated and members of the aristocracy. IF John PRESCOTT is the son of Ralph PRESCOTT, his
royal line can be found in WEIS' "Ancestral Lines..."; 6th edition; #43, Line 34.
Arrived in Boston 1640, settled in Lancaster by 1643.
From Prescotts Unlimited. Vol. 1, Issue 2.
JOHN PRESCOTT and his wife MARY (GAWKROGER) came to New England from Sowerby in Yorkshire via an abortive attempt to settle in the Barbadoes. Some catastrophic event (possibly a hurricane) killed about 6,000 people in the islands in a very short time, but the Prescotts survived and left for New England. They bought land in Watertown, MA and were there for one or two years before arranging to settle on a large tract of land along the Nashaway River which later became known as the Nashaway Plantation.
John settled on a spot that had been developed as a truck stop for trading with the Indians, and from that beginning he worked at inviting other friends and relatives to join him in the settlement. It prospered fairly well until the Indians destroyed it in 1676. John and Mary lost two sons-in-law in this massacre, as well as a child of each of these families. Also, they lost all their personal effects, including any documents or letters that might have revealed their ancestry in England. The survivors were evacuated to points east, but most families and asome new ones moved back about three years later. John and Mary returned, and John died there in 1781. Mary made a desposition in 1678, but there is no date of death for her.
On April 8, 1673, before the massacre, John made a long will in which he named his wife and living children: Mary, John, Sarah, Lydia, Jonathan and Jonas. They'd had a daughter Martha who'd married John Rugg, but she had died together with her infant twins in 1655-56. The Hannah who married the widowed John Rugg was living at the time of the will, but she was not mentioned in it, so it is concluded that she was not a daughter of John and Mary. No one to date, has any clue as to her family identity. Some of Hannah Rugg's descendants later married into the Prescott family, so there are Prescott lineages in some parts of the Rugg family. Dr. Weis made this correction in his lifetime in John of Lancaster. We have heard from descendants of all of these children, including Hannah.
