Note: Born in at the old Heywood Mansion on what is now Thoreau Street.
Jonas worked with his father Samuel upon the farm, and in the winter went with him to learn the Shoemakers trade (cordwainer). In those days the shoemaker or cordwainer went from house to house in town and to nearby towns where he repaired and made new shoes for the family. Jonas, while an apprentice, met Ann Prescott, whom he later married.
He served on the Commitee of Inspection to see that the articles of association of the Continental Congress were carried out. He was one of a company of minute men raised in Concord in the year of 1774. In 1775, gunpowder and provisions including barrels of flour were stored in his home for use of the citizens in case of war.
On April 26, 1775 Concord became an independent republic. A committe was chosen and Jonas Heywood, Sr. was made chairman. It was while he was chairman, that Dr. Lee was tried and found guilty of treason. He served on this committee until 1783 when it was no longer needed.
Jonas Sr. was among the first members of the Social Circle of Concord and remained until his death at the age of 87. He served as Captain in the Revolutionary War and was muster master for a company of Middlesex militia, which he also commanded.
An interesting document was found signed by Jonas Heywood, Captain, Muster MAster dated April 25, 1781 stating that Asa Kemp is mustered for 3 years in the Continental Service for the Town of Townsend in class whereof Mr. Jonathon Wallis and othermembers, etc..
He attended the State Convention held in Concord 14 July 1779 as a delegate.
