ELMER STUTZMAN, 65, DIES AT SHANKSVILLE
Contractor Succumbs After Long Illness of Dropsy; Funeral Tomorrow
SHANKSVILLE, Nov. 2 -- Elmer E. Stutzman, aged 65, who had been a resident of Shanksville for the last 30 years, died Saturday night at his home, following an illness of several months of dropsy and heart trouble. He was a son of Harry and Mary Jane Stutzman, both deceased, and was born in Somerset Township. His father was a veteran of the Civil War. Mr. Stutzman was engaged in the contracting business here for a number of years.
He and Miss Alice Miller, a daughter of Jacob and Catherine Miller, both deceased, were married here 41 years ago.
Surviving are his widow, a stepson, Charles Hunter, of Johnstown, and two daughters, Mrs. Wright Mostoller and Mrs. Nevin Friedline, both of Listie. He also leaves nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
The deceased was a brother of Mrs. C.A. Ross, of Shanksville; Mrs. Robert Hunter, of Somerset Township; Mrs. James Metzger, of Stoystown; Mrs. Ralph Lyons, of Monrotown, PA; Otto Stutzman, of Detroit, Mich.; George Stutzman, a veteran of the World War who resides in San Diego, Cal., and Harry B. Stutzman, of Somerset Township.
Funeral services will be conducted tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, with interment in the Shanksville Cemetary. Following the commital of the body at the cemetary, services will be conducted in the Reformed Church, in charge of the Rev. H. D. Gress and the Rev. Maynard Sparks. Undertaker C. H. Occupation: Place: Carpenter
Note: NOT Alice's husband, but possible father of her son Charles Hunter.
Note: The 1910 census for Elmer shows 4-month old Osberne Baldwin grandson living with them, could this be the same child later known as Robert Stutzman? Year: 1910; Census Place: Stony Creek, Somerset, Pennsylvania; Roll: T624_1421; Page: 2B; Enumeration District: 165; Image: 49.
Note: Charles never lived with his mother. In 1900 he was living with Alice's
parents Jacob & Catherine. Later his uncle John Miller who ran the county
home known then as the "Poor House" took Charles in at the home. According
to Charles, uncle John was mean, and then he went to live with his nice uncle
Robert Miller on his farm.
Note: Direct descendant of Christian Shank, founder of Shanksville.
Daughter of John Shank and Sarah Jane Spangler.
Note: Married Herbert Wilson
Note: John was mildly retarded and never married. He lived with his parents his
entire life. Nancy Hallberg surmises that taking care of John was one of the
reasons Aunt Nell lived to age 107.
Probably died in Niagra Falls, NY

Elmer's marriage lists his father as Harry. Lizzie's marriage consent for (as she was under 21) was signed by Henry Stutzman. I suppose then that Harry was a nickname for Henry.

Occupation: Place: Farmer and Cooper
Note: Harry Stutzman's death certificate spells her name Layman.
It seems that her nickname was probably Polly. Census records for 1850 list
her as Polly as does the book "Descendants of Barbara Hochstetler & Christian
Stutzman. All other censuses and Harry's death certificate list her as Mary.
