Bullard, George (b. BET 1607 AND 1608, d. 14 JAN 1687/88)

GEORGE BULLARD [#970], b. England abt. 1607-8, d. Watertown, MA Jan. 14, 1688-9,[8/61] m(1) Margaret ____, d. Watertown Feb. 8, 163940,[8/7] m(2) abt. 1640 BEATRICE HALL, d. Dedham, MA May 29, 1652, m(3) Watertown April 30, 1655[8/18] widow Mary Marplehead.
George Bullard was born in England, probably in the parish of Barnham, St. Martin, Suffolk about 1607 or 1608 (he deposed in 1658 as "age about fifty years"). The name of his first wife was Margaret, parentage not known. She died in Watertown Feb. 8, 163940 apparently at the birth of Mary. He married second about 1641, Beatrice Hall of Boston, parentage also unknown. She died in Dedham, MA on May 29, 1652. "Bettrice Hall, maidservant of Jacob Elliot" was admitted to the First Church of Boston on June 20, 1640. "Beatrice Hall, now wife of one George Bullard of Watertown", was dismissed to the church at Watertown on Nov. 17, 1644. He married third "the last of April" 1655, the widow Mary Marplehead who was alive in 1684.[5]
George was evidently already a member of the church, for he was admitted the Freeman's oath on May 13, 1641, a privilege accorded only to property owners who were church members. He had lands assigned to him at Watertown Farms which later became Weston.
In 1639 George was described as having a homestall of eight acres bounded west by John Knolls, east by Ester Pickram, south with the highway, and north by Maudlin and Anne Bullard.[6/1:39] He still had this land in the third inventory[6/1:126] but sold it soon after, on April 4, 1644, to Thomas Straight.[5] There was a Robert Bullard in town at the same time as George. He died June 29, 1639, age 40[8/1:7] and was thus the right age to be George's brother. Robert's widow Anne owned the land that abutted George's, adding further weight to a close relationship.
At a meeting of Watertown Selectmen on Dec. 23, 1684, it was ordered that "John Ball, son-in-law and Jonathan Bullard, son be notified of the necessity of help for father Bullard and his wife".[7/2:20] Mary is listed in the birth records as a daughter of George and Beatrice, b. Feb. 12, 163940, yet George's first wife Margaret is listed as having died four days before that.[8/1:7] I'm sure she didn't kill herself over an illegitimate child. Presumably Mary's mother was really Margaret, who died in childbirth, and obviously the dates are incorrect. This may be answered with the statistics being recorded some years after the events.
See the overseas ancestor section for the parentage of George Bullard. His mother was Grace Bignett who died in 1629-30. She left a will in which are given the names of her children. The names of her four sons disappear from the English records at about the same time they first appear in New England, which forms a most important link in the chain of connecting proof of their English home. Although no record has been found to determine the date of their sailing, it is believed they came to Massachusetts about 1635.[1/13]

(1999) The following information was compiled by: Michael Roman, 13 Saddle Hill Drive, Northboro, MA 01532:
JOSEPH MORSE, b. abt. 1610, d. Watertown, MA March 4, 1690-1, m. abt. 1636 HESTER PEIRCE (dau. of John Peirce and Elizabeth).
According to the shipping lists, Joseph Morse came to America in 1634 in the ship Elizabeth of Ipswich, Suffolk. He settled in Watertown, where he was admitted freeman May 6, 1635 and was a proprietor of Watertown in 1636.[1]
In the first inventory of lands and grants in Watertown, taken in 1639, Joseph Morse had 1) a homestall of eighteen acres bounded east by John Coolidge, west by the common, north by John Witherell, and south by John Clough and William Paine; 2) one acre of meadow in Patch Meadow; 3) lot 4 of two acres of remote meadow; 4) lot 26 of 25 acres of upland being a great divident in the third division; and 5) a farm of 73 acres of upland in the sixth division.[5/1:35] In the second inventory of about 1644, the 18 acre homestall was not mentioned but was replaced by an eight acre homestall bounded north by the highway, south by Richard Woodward, west by John Wincoll, and east by John Sprague. The 73 acre farm was replaced by three lots: three acres of plowland; two acres of plowland in the further plain; and lot 6 of six acres of upland beyond the further plain.[5/1:91] The third inventory of about 1646 listed only the 18 acre homestall described in the first inventory.[5/1:123]
Joseph agreed to take John Ball's daughter Ester for two years. Ester was Joseph's niece and the Ball's were apparently unable to care for their children due to the condition of the mother.[3/1:57] Joseph was to receive 18 pence per week - four punds from John Ball, the rest from the town.[3/1:64] Seems like no one took anyone in for free back then - not even family. Joseph was chosen in 1659 to "looke to the order concerning hogs & Fences".[3/1:64]
Joseph did not leave a will, and judging by the size of his estate at the time of his death, it must be assumed he had already distributed his possessions to his children. The inventory of his estate was taken by Theophilus Roads and John Mason and amounted to 6.2.6.[4/7:167]

Note: Joseph and Dorothy Morse came from England after their son had left England and settled in Ipswich in 1635-36.
(1999) The following information was compiled by: Michael Roman, 13 Saddle Hill Drive, Northboro, MA 01532:
JOSEPH MORSE, bap. Boxtead, Essex, England Nov. 4, 1576, d. probably at Ipswich, MA between April 24 and Sept. 28, 1646, m. DOROTHY ____, d. after April 24, 1646.
Joseph Morse was baptised at Boxtead in the county of Essex, England Novemebr 4, 1576 and lived in Dedham, Essex with his parents. He later moved to Ipswich, MA. The exact time of Joseph's emigration to New England is unkown, but he was a proprietor of Ipswich in 1637. He was married in England to Dorothy who survived him. Her surname has not been found.[2/2923]
Joseph Morse's will was dated April 24 and proved Sept. 29, 1646. In it he mentions his children Joseph, John, and Hannah. Dorothy was made executrix. The inventory of the estate was taken Sept. 28, 1646 and amounted to 83.01.10.[2/293]
